ERIE, Pa. – In a tragic incident that shook the community of Erie, Pennsylvania, a mass shooting claimed the lives of eight individuals, including a toddler. The gunman, described as a grandfather, appeared to be an ordinary person to those around him, leaving many in disbelief regarding his actions.

Julius Windham, who lost his 1-year-old daughter Amarianna, alongside her pregnant mother and her 5-year-old son, expressed his shock at the violence. “I think that was a front for him,” Windham remarked at a memorial site adorned with candles, flowers, and stuffed animals. “Him every day, him smiling and being just — you would think of nothing like that would happen.”

The 45-year-old gunman, who took his own life following the shooting, had familial ties to seven of the victims, according to Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah. The identity of the shooter has not been disclosed, and the police have yet to release the names of the victims.

The shooting unfolded shortly before 5 p.m. on a Friday, with witnesses reporting muffled gunfire before two women, described as distressed, arrived and began pounding on the door. Tragically, the shooter confronted them outside, firing upon them as they attempted to escape.

Inside the home, responding officers discovered the bodies of the young children alongside two women and two young men in various locations within the house, with the shooter found deceased on the second floor. Chief Lorah emphasized the importance of respecting the victims and their families during this challenging time, stating, “I want our community to understand the gravity of what happened and the profound impact this tragedy has had on those involved and on our community as a whole.”

As investigations continue, authorities have yet to determine a clear motive. Chief Lorah hinted that mental health considerations might play a role, indicating that investigators would speak to relatives and examine the victims’ cellphones to gather more context on the situation.

Friends of the victims, Nicole and Debra Eller, expressed their sorrow over the tragedy. They described the shooter as a once good man whose life had taken a downward turn. “They were a lovely family. Who would have thought this would ever happen?” Debra Eller lamented.

This horrific event bears similarities to a massacre in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, in 1982, where a man killed 13 people, including five of his own children. Erie Mayor Daria Devlin addressed the community and the victims’ families, stating, “What happened to you was horrific, and there is nothing that any of us can say today that will make this any easier. … Our entire community is with you, we’re grieving with you. And we are here to support you.”
