NEW YORK – The New York Rangers suffered a significant blow to their roster as goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a right knee injury sustained during a game against the Washington Capitals on Friday night, as confirmed by the team on Saturday.
Shesterkin’s injury occurred when he made an aggressive move to challenge a shooter midway through the second period. In an unfortunate turn of events, he fell awkwardly into his own net, appearing to jam his right skate into the post. He was unable to put any weight on his leg as teammates assisted him off the ice, a concerning sight for both players and fans alike.
Following the 3-1 loss to the Capitals, Rangers captain J.T. Miller expressed his dismay, stating, “It’s awful, you know? He’s a pillar of this team. It stinks.” Coach Mike Sullivan echoed these sentiments, highlighting Shesterkin’s elite skills and importance to the team. “He’s an elite goaltender, and you never want to see anyone get hurt,” Sullivan noted.
Shesterkin, the 2022 Vezina Trophy winner, previously dealt with injuries last season that contributed to the Rangers finishing last in the Eastern Conference. However, he had made a promising start this season, boasting a 3-1 record and an impressive 1.76 goals-against average. Notably, he made headlines last week as the first Rangers goalie to score a goal, lofting the puck into an empty net during a home opener against Tampa Bay.
Despite the setback, Miller conveyed optimism about the team’s performance, stating, “We’re not going to let that take the wind out of our sails. We love the way we’re playing most of the time.” In the game against Washington, Shesterkin stopped 13 of 14 shots before leaving with the score tied 1-1. He was replaced by backup Dylan Garand, who faced a challenging situation but managed to make 11 saves on 12 shots.
Garand, only 24 years old, was recalled from the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League last week after clearing waivers. He made a strong impression in his previous outing, achieving a 2-0 shutout against Detroit. Over three starts with the Rangers last season, Garand maintained a 1.62 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage.
To add to the Rangers’ challenges, veteran goaltender Joonas Korpisalo, acquired from the Boston Bruins in the offseason, was also placed on injured reserve last week due to a lower-body injury. This leaves the Rangers in a precarious situation as they navigate the season with a depleted goaltending roster.
As the Rangers move forward, the team will need to rally and support their remaining players while hoping for Shesterkin’s eventual recovery. The impact of his absence will undoubtedly be felt, but the resilience of the team may shine through as they adapt to this new challenge.
