SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Spurs are approaching the upcoming NBA season with a cautious mindset, particularly when it comes to the health of their players. Head coach Mitch Johnson recently provided an update on forward Tobias Harris, who is recovering from a calf strain sustained during training camp. Johnson emphasized that Harris will not be rushed back into action, leaving his availability for the Spurs’ regular-season opener on October 20 against the Oklahoma City Thunder uncertain.

“It’s a calf strain; the seriousness is what it is,” Johnson stated. He added, “Is he ready for the season opener? Totally questionable, and we will not push that at all.” This approach reflects a broader strategy within the organization to prioritize player health and readiness over immediate performance.

While there is no immediate concern regarding the severity of Harris’s injury, Johnson reiterated the team’s commitment to ensuring that Harris is fully prepared before he steps back onto the court. The Spurs have officially listed him as questionable for the season opener, underscoring their cautious approach to his recovery.

The update on Harris came during the Spurs’ open scrimmage held at the Frost Bank Center, which offered fans an exciting opportunity to witness the team in action. The event attracted a packed crowd, marking the Spurs’ first appearance at the arena since the NBA Finals. The scrimmage served as a platform for fan interaction and allowed players to build on-court chemistry as they prepare for the season ahead.

This season’s scrimmage showcased not only the team’s established players but also highlighted the potential of its rookies. Notably, Victor Wembanyama took on a leadership role during the event, even acting as a coach and drawing up plays for his teammates. Such initiatives demonstrate the Spurs’ commitment to fostering a collaborative and supportive team environment.

In addition to Wembanyama’s contributions, rookie center Tarris Reed Jr. stood out with his energetic performance throughout the scrimmage. Reed, who previously played under Coach Dan Hurley at the University of Connecticut, emphasized the importance of hard work and accountability instilled in him during his college career. “Coach Hurley didn’t play about practice, man,” Reed shared, referencing the rigorous training environment. “I’m carrying that over to my next step.”

During the scrimmage, Reed faced the challenge of defending Wembanyama, whom he referred to as “the best in the world.” His remarks echoed the high expectations surrounding Wembanyama as he enters the league. “What’s good about him is he’s about the right stuff. He plays hard, he elevates practice, elevates the game,” Reed noted, highlighting Wembanyama’s impact on his teammates and the overall intensity of practice.

The Spurs’ preseason kicks off on Thursday night against the Atlanta Hawks, marking an early NBA homecoming for Kingston Flemings, a Brennan High School alum. As the team gears up for the season, fans remain hopeful for a successful campaign while eagerly awaiting Harris’s recovery and return to the court.
