SAN ANTONIO – Five talented San Antonio artists recently gathered at the Pearl to honor Día de los Muertos, a cherished tradition that celebrates life and death through vibrant calaveras. These four-foot skulls, each a unique canvas, reflect personal stories told through the diverse artistic styles of the creators.
Among the featured artists are sisters Manola and Maria Ramirez, who crafted a calavera inspired by their beloved grandmother. “She used to sew a lot, and she always loved her garden,” shared Manola. “For me personally, I was like, why don’t we sort of embody that with embroidery and plants?” Their work is a heartfelt tribute that intertwines memories and creativity.
The Ramirez sisters have collaborated on various designs and projects over the years, creating a powerful synergy that enhances their artistic expressions. “My sister and I were really good. I think since we’ve been working together for a long time, whenever we need that extra sort of support, that’s how we create,” Manola explained. “At the end of it, we both want the same thing, which is a good outcome.” This partnership exemplifies the deeper connections that art can forge.
For the Ramirez sisters, Día de los Muertos transcends mere celebration; it is a tradition steeped in childhood memories that they now carry into adulthood. “I think it’s a very special thing to be able to share that with people who don’t know about it,” Manola remarked, highlighting the educational aspect of the festivities. The celebration serves as a bridge between generations and cultures.
Maria added, “When it comes to Día de los Muertos, you’re with community. So I remember having that moment and going to clean the tombstone and putting flowers and candles. It feels weirdly magical.” This sense of community and shared experience is at the heart of the celebration, reminding everyone of the importance of remembrance and connection.
The vibrant display of calaveras will continue at the Pearl from October 23 through November 5, culminating in a free Día de los Muertos celebration. During the weekends leading up to the event, visitors can watch artists live painting, offering a glimpse into the creative process behind these captivating works.
For those interested in experiencing this unique cultural event, the Pearl is a hub for artistic expression and community engagement, making it a must-visit destination this fall.
