LONDON – In a challenging turn of events for the Washington Commanders, quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a knee injury during the first quarter of Sunday’s matchup against the Indianapolis Colts. This unfortunate incident occurred at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, leaving fans and teammates concerned about his condition.
Head Coach Dan Quinn addressed the situation during halftime, confirming to NFL Network that Mariota would not return to the game. “We’re gutted for him,” Quinn expressed, reflecting the team’s disappointment and support for their injured player.
The Commanders were already facing adversity, having ruled out their starter, Jayden Daniels, due to an elbow injury earlier in the week. Consequently, third-string quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis was thrust into the spotlight to lead the team.
Before his exit, Mariota had shown promise, leading the Commanders to an early 3-0 lead. His initial drive included a notable 35-yard run, showcasing his agility and offensive capabilities. However, the momentum shifted when Mariota was sacked by Colts defenders Adetomiwa Adebawore and Laiatu Latu. Following the sack, Mariota exited the field gingerly, and teammate Drew Stevens subsequently added a field goal, extending the lead to 6-0.
At halftime, Kaliakmanis had completed six of twelve passes for 33 yards, but the Colts had taken the lead at 10-6. Despite the challenging circumstances, Coach Quinn expressed confidence in Kaliakmanis, who was drafted by the Commanders in the seventh round of the 2026 NFL Draft.
Kaliakmanis is not just recognized for his athletic abilities; he takes pride in his Greek heritage. His family background is an integral part of his identity, as evidenced by his tattoo sleeve featuring the word οικογένεια, which translates to “family,” along with an icon representing Saint Athanasius of Alexandria, after whom he is named. Among fans and teammates, he has earned the nickname “The Greek Rifle,” highlighting both his lineage and his promising arm strength.
As the Commanders navigate this pivotal moment in their season, the focus will be on Mariota’s recovery and Kaliakmanis’s development as he steps into a more prominent role. The team’s resilience and depth will be tested, but there’s hope that they can rally together in support of their players.
