NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas – A tragic head-on collision in New Braunfels has resulted in the death of a 27-year-old father, Alejandro Nunez, and led to serious charges against two men involved in the crash. The incident, which occurred on September 12, has drawn attention not only because of its devastating consequences but also due to the immigration status of the suspects.
The New Braunfels police arrested Rafael Alejandro Arreguin-Ramirez, 25, and Alejandro Aguillen-Acosta, 23, after their vehicle collided with Nunez’s sedan in the 2500 block of Farm-to-Market 725. Investigators reported that Arreguin-Ramirez displayed signs of intoxication at the scene, raising concerns about the circumstances leading to the crash.
Nunez had just picked up his 3-year-old daughter from his father’s home when the collision occurred. Tragically, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His daughter survived but suffered a broken wrist and was treated at a local hospital.
Federal Immigration Detainers Issued
Following the crash, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued federal immigration detainers for both Arreguin-Ramirez and Aguillen-Acosta. According to a news release, both men entered the United States illegally from Mexico. The detainers were placed on September 13, the day after their arrest, while they were booked into the Guadalupe County Jail.

An ICE detainer is a federal request asking local law enforcement to notify federal authorities before releasing a suspect, allowing ICE to take custody of the individual. “ICE has lodged detainers asking our partners in Texas to cooperate with us so that these criminals can be removed from our country after they face justice,” said a DHS official. “My thoughts and prayers are with Alex Nunez’s family, as well as for the child’s speedy recovery.”
Both Arreguin-Ramirez and Aguillen-Acosta remain in custody at the Guadalupe County Jail. They are facing serious charges including intoxication manslaughter, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and evading arrest.
Family Grieves at Crash Site
Witnesses reported that Aguillen-Acosta, who was a passenger in the truck, fled the scene on foot after the collision. Officers later found and arrested him inside a garage in a nearby neighborhood.
In the aftermath of the crash, Nunez’s family gathered at the site on FM 725 to pray and mourn the loss of the young father. “I still, I’m in shock. I don’t believe it,” said Jennifer Edoziem, Nunez’s mother. “My son is gone. I’m not going to see him again… His daughter is going to be without daddy.”
Raul Nunez, Alejandro’s father, expressed his deep sorrow, recalling the moment he heard sirens shortly after his son left home. “When somebody takes his life away, that’s very, very hard. I don’t wish that upon nobody, any parents,” he said. “They took my son away, and that’s what really hurts.”
As the community grapples with this tragedy, the New Braunfels police continue to investigate the crash, seeking answers and justice for Alejandro Nunez and his grieving family.
