SAN ANTONIO – More than 900 runners and walkers gathered at Providence High School Saturday for the annual Head for the Cure event, raising more than $75,000 for brain cancer research and patient support programs.
For many participants, this event transcends a mere race; it embodies a personal mission fueled by hope and remembrance. Each year, individuals come together to honor their loved ones and to advocate for a future free of brain cancer.
Linzie Davis and her daughter Alexza were among the hundreds who turned out to remember loved ones and reaffirm why they keep coming back year after year. “It means so much when you see something like this still going so strong all these years later,” Davis remarked, highlighting the deep emotional connection that the event fosters.
Davis emphasized the shared experience of loss and hope that makes the Head for the Cure event particularly poignant. “So you see year after year, whether it’s a new diagnosis or something of the past, we’re all here championing the same cause. And it’s just beautiful to see that love and community support,” she shared.
Another heartfelt participant, Clara Hartfiel, expressed her dedication to the cause as a tribute to her father. “My dad was diagnosed with a medulloblastoma in 2009, the year that I was born, and he fought for 13 years, so we honor him. He passed away in 2022, but his memory still lives on through this race,” Hartfiel said.
For Hartfiel, the presence of her neighbors and community members serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of finding a cure. She hopes that others will remember her father not for the disease he faced, but for the vibrant life he lived. “He wasn’t defined by this disease. He was defined by who he was as a person,” she passionately stated.
The Head for the Cure event has become a cherished community tradition in San Antonio. Last year, nearly 1,000 runners and walkers participated, raising more than $60,000 for brain cancer research. Each year, the event grows, bringing together individuals running in honor of family members, friends, or even themselves. This annual gathering not only raises funds but also cultivates a spirit of solidarity and hope among those affected by brain cancer.
