SAN ANTONIO – Standing on a downtown street Sunday night, Jennifer Benavides was just moments away from boarding her #77 bus when an unexpected encounter changed everything.
As she waited at the bus stop near Pecan and Navarro streets, a woman approached her, asking to borrow her phone. This request soon took a surprising turn when the woman made an astonishing offer: “Very beautiful baby. Handsome. One month old,” she said. “(The woman was), like, ‘Well, do you want him? I’m going to give him away. I’m going to give him to somebody.”
Benavides, taken aback by the offer, later reached out after her story was featured in the news, identifying herself as the person who encountered the stranger. She recounted her shock at the woman’s intentions and tried to persuade her against giving away the baby.
In an act of compassion, Benavides convinced the woman, later identified as Ibarra, to accompany her to a friend’s house. There, she fed and changed the baby’s diaper, ensuring the infant was cared for while they also contacted San Antonio police for assistance.
After calling for an Uber ride, Ibarra left the baby behind with Benavides at her friend’s home. However, the situation escalated when Ibarra returned to the scene while police were present, leading to her arrest on a charge of child abandonment.
Reflecting on the event, Benavides stated, “I can’t take any credit for that. God just put me at the right place and the right time.” She expressed her concern about the incident, noting the available resources and support for those in need, and how upsetting it was that someone would resort to such drastic measures.
Initially, Benavides feared she might also face legal trouble when she saw Ibarra being taken into custody. She worried that Ibarra might tell a different story to the officers that could implicate her. However, after Ibarra’s arrest, Child Protective Services confirmed that the baby was safely placed with other relatives, ensuring the child would receive proper care.
This incident highlights the importance of community awareness and the need for resources to support individuals facing difficult situations. It serves as a reminder that sometimes, being in the right place at the right time can make a significant difference in someone’s life.
