LOS ANGELES – This year’s Emmy Awards faced a bit of a drop in ratings, with about 6.7 million viewers tuning in to watch the 78th primetime Emmy Awards on NBC. This marks a nearly 10% decline from last year, which had seen some growth in its viewership numbers.

The ceremony, hosted by Mariska Hargitay from “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” celebrated the best in television. One of the biggest winners of the night was Apple TV’s “Widow’s Bay,” which set a record for comedies by winning 14 Emmys. “The Pitt” continued its success by winning the best drama award for the second consecutive year.

However, the Emmys faced tough competition, going head-to-head with the first Monday Night Football game of the year featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos on ESPN. Last year, the Emmy telecast attracted 6.87 million viewers on ABC, and the year before that, it reached 7.42 million on CBS.

Despite this year’s decrease, the Emmys still performed better than the all-time low of 4.3 million viewers from January 2024, which was impacted by Hollywood’s writers and actors strikes. The Emmys rotate its broadcast among the four major networks each year, with this year’s show airing on NBC.

Unfortunately, the Emmys have consistently lagged behind other prestigious awards shows like the Oscars and Grammys, attracting less than half their viewership. The Golden Globes also pull in significantly more viewers. The timing of the Emmys in September means they often compete with football, a live event that consistently draws large audiences.

This year, the Emmys moved from their usual Sunday slot to Monday to avoid conflict with Sunday Night Football. Unfortunately, this meant they had to compete against Monday Night Football without the benefit of a football game leading into the ceremony, which some networks use to boost ratings.

In today’s streaming era, shows nominated for Emmys often generate buzz but may not have the same viewer numbers as past hits. In the 1990s, shows like “Seinfeld” and “ER” attracted massive audiences alongside their Emmy wins, which is a different scenario compared to today’s popular series like “Widow’s Bay” and “The Pitt.”

The last time the Emmys garnered over 10 million viewers was in 2018, with a total of 10.2 million. In the year 2000, the show reached nearly 22 million viewers, a milestone that seems unlikely to be replicated in the near future.
