MELBOURNE – The San Francisco 49ers embraced every moment of their weeklong adventure in Australia. Adjusting their body clocks, they took in Melbourne’s sights and flavors before emerging victorious against their division rival in the NFL’s first regular-season game in the Southern Hemisphere.
The Los Angeles Rams, in stark contrast, arrived just 28 hours before kickoff and left with their Super Bowl aspirations in turmoil after suffering a crushing defeat.
In a dominant performance, the 49ers defeated the Rams 27-7 on Friday, with Brock Purdy throwing touchdown passes to Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson, and Deebo Samuel. Purdy completed 205 yards against a struggling Rams defense at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, entertaining a crowd of 100,021—marking the seventh-largest regular-season attendance in NFL history.
Australia’s sporting capital was treated to its first true taste of American football, and the 49ers endeared themselves to local fans by arriving in Melbourne a week ahead of the Rams. Evans, who had an impressive debut with six catches, commented, “It was definitely worth it to come a little bit early. We definitely got acclimated. All the guys attacked it. We didn’t complain. We actually enjoyed being here in Melbourne.”
A festive atmosphere filled the stadium despite the early morning kickoff tailored for U.S. television audiences. The NFC West rivalry reached new heights as the 49ers showcased superior play on both offense and defense.
Coach Kyle Shanahan noted the arena’s imposing presence, describing it as “gladiator-ish” and expressing satisfaction that his team played with a sense of belonging. “It felt like home once we got here,” he remarked.
Kyren Williams scored the first Australian touchdown in the NFL, rushing for five yards to start the second quarter. However, the 49ers quickly regained control, scoring the game’s final 24 points.
While Purdy’s offense delivered just enough big plays to secure the win, the San Francisco defense stifled NFL MVP Matthew Stafford, limiting him to 155 yards on 15 completions out of 25 attempts. Under Raheem Morris, the Niners’ defense held the Rams—who boasted the league’s top offense last season—to 290 total yards and one touchdown. They even thwarted Stafford on a critical fourth-down sneak from the San Francisco 1-yard line in the third quarter.
Stafford acknowledged the team’s struggles, stating, “Probably only had two good drives, to be honest. Not enough good stuff on offense. We didn’t do the things that we’re accustomed to doing. Too many times, we were on different pages. That starts with me.”
In contrast, Myles Garrett had a quiet debut for the Rams after a significant injury setback, recording no tackles and admitting, “This was the worst version of myself that I’ve put out there, and I’ve got to be better.”
The teams’ contrasting travel plans drew attention leading up to the game. The 49ers immersed themselves in the local culture to adjust their body clocks, while the Rams opted for a last-minute flight, staying on California time until just before the game.
Coach Sean McVay acknowledged the scrutiny surrounding the Rams’ travel decision but emphasized that it wasn’t the sole reason for their lackluster performance, stating, “I know there’s gonna be a lot of narratives that appropriately put the blame on me, and then we’ll move forward the right way.”
The game commenced with both teams displaying understandable sluggishness during the early 10:35 a.m. kickoff. Williams’ touchdown run ignited the crowd, leading to a series of exchanges that saw both quarterbacks throw interceptions before Purdy found Robinson for a pivotal 39-yard touchdown.
The 49ers surged out of halftime, with Samuel’s 45-yard kickoff return setting up Evans’ touchdown catch over new Rams cornerback Jaylen Watson. The Rams’ attempt to penetrate the red zone was thwarted when Puka Nacua was ruled down inches shy of the goal line, resulting in another stop by the 49ers’ defense.
Following that critical defensive stand, San Francisco responded with a 99-yard drive concluding in a touchdown catch by Samuel, solidifying their dominance in the game.
Looking ahead, the 49ers will host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, September 20, while the Rams will face off against the New York Giants on Monday, September 21.
