SAN ANTONIO – San Japan, a popular anime and gaming convention, is celebrating its 17th year this weekend. It has become one of the largest fan gatherings in South Texas, attracting thousands of attendees who share a passion for anime, gaming, and cosplay.
This three-day event, held over Labor Day weekend at the Henry B. González Convention Center, has drawn fans from all over the country. Attendees can enjoy a variety of activities, including cosplay contests, gaming sessions, panels with industry experts, meet-and-greets, and a marketplace filled with artist vendors and arcade experiences.
“Last year, we had about 35,000 attendees, and it looks like we’re on track to break that record this year,” said San Japan Chairman Miguel Rodriguez. This growth reflects the convention’s increasing popularity and the vibrant community that surrounds it.
For many, San Japan is more than just a place to showcase costumes and buy collectibles. It’s a chance to meet others who share similar interests. Attendee Adriana Fazin expressed her excitement: “Seeing everyone’s amazing cosplays and being here in person is really cool.”
Violet Casey, who came from Connecticut on a family trip, highlighted the importance of community at conventions. “Connecting with new people is one of the best parts. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly,” she said. This sense of camaraderie is a significant draw for many fans.
Longtime attendees have noticed how San Japan has evolved over the years. Andrew, a veteran of the convention, shared, “I’ve been coming since San Japan 11, and it’s amazing to see how much it has grown, especially in the number of guests and cosplayers.”
He also mentioned that the event has increasingly featured performers and guests from around the globe, adding to the diversity and excitement of the experience.
San Japan will continue through Sunday, wrapping up at 5 p.m. This event remains a cherished highlight for fans, providing a unique opportunity to connect, celebrate, and share their love for anime and gaming.
