WASHINGTON – In a significant personnel change, President Donald Trump has appointed Adam Telle as the acting Army secretary, following the abrupt departure of Dan Driscoll. Reports indicate that Driscoll’s resignation was influenced by tensions with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, although he has not publicly stated the reasons behind his decision.

Telle, who previously served as the assistant secretary of the Army for civil works, is stepping into a crucial role during a time of heightened military engagement. Trump expressed his confidence in Telle, describing him as “a Great Patriot, who is respected by all” in a post on Truth Social.

Driscoll’s exit marks the end of an 18-month tenure as the Army’s top civilian leader. His time in office was notably marked by reported clashes with Hegseth, particularly regarding personnel decisions that saw some of Driscoll’s allies dismissed from their posts. This includes the ousting of Gen. Randy George, the Army’s top uniformed leader.

Adam Telle’s background is extensive, with over two decades of experience in congressional roles. He served as chief of staff for Republican Senator Bill Haggerty of Tennessee and spent significant time in the White House during Trump’s first term as a special assistant for legislative affairs. His experience in government positions equips him with a solid foundation as he takes the helm of the nation’s largest fighting force.

The U.S. Army is currently engaged in conflicts, notably with Iran, which has intensified the pressure on military resources. This includes a critical shortfall in weapons systems such as the Patriot and THAAD defense missile interceptors, essential for national defense strategies.

Driscoll, an Army veteran who served in Iraq, did not provide insight into his resignation but acknowledged the honor of serving as Army secretary. His departure has drawn attention from both sides of the political spectrum, with figures like Sen. Thom Tillis expressing concern over the leadership vacuum at the top of military ranks attributed to Hegseth’s influence.

As Telle begins his role, he will oversee the Army amid ongoing military challenges and strategic decisions that will shape the future of U.S. defense operations. The transition comes at a critical juncture, underscoring the importance of stable leadership in the military as the nation navigates complex global threats.
