SAN ANTONIO – Watch the video of Sarah’s school science experiment in the video player above.
Hello parents, teachers, and students! Science with Sarah is back for the 2026-2027 school year. This year’s first experiment is a delightful classic: making ice cream at home. Not only is this a fun activity, but it also serves as a fantastic way to explore the concept of changing states of matter!

MAKE YOUR HYPOTHESIS
Before starting, consider this question: How long will it take for the ice cream to form? Making a hypothesis encourages critical thinking and allows students to engage with the scientific process.
DO THE EXPERIMENT
1. Prepare your ice cream bag with the mixture.

2. Place the sealed ice cream bag into a larger bag filled with ice and salt.

3. Shake the outer bag vigorously!

4. Enjoy your freshly made ice cream!

HOW IT WORKS
The science behind this delightful treat involves the effect of salt on ice. The salt lowers the melting temperature of the ice, which creates a very cold environment around the ice cream mixture. As you shake the bag, the movement helps the liquid cream freeze into a solid form. This experiment is an engaging way to visualize the transformation of a liquid (cream) into a solid (ice cream) as it undergoes the freezing process!
Enjoy your homemade treat!
