BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – In a troubling case that has captured the attention of the community, Marlene Vidal, a 34-year-old mother from Edinburg, has been accused of setting a vehicle on fire with her two young children inside. On Wednesday, she made her first court appearance in San Antonio before Judge Joel Perez.
During the hearing, prosecutors announced that they are not currently seeking the death penalty for Vidal. Both the prosecution and her defense team informed the court that they are still in the process of gathering evidence for their cases. Judge Perez scheduled another court hearing in approximately 60 days to review the progress.
Background
The tragic events unfolded on May 15, when first responders discovered the bodies of Vidal’s two children around 5 a.m. behind a warehouse located on Richland Hills Drive, near Potranco Road. Upon arrival at the scene, San Antonio police detained Vidal, who was later identified as the mother of the deceased children.
On May 26, the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identities of the children as Aleeza Elena Vidal, aged 6, and Adrian Akeel Vidal, aged 5. According to the indictment, both children had been cut and stabbed with a knife, and the medical examiner ruled their deaths as homicides.
Vidal faces serious charges including two counts of capital murder of a person under 10 years of age, capital murder of multiple persons, two counts of injury to a child with intent to cause serious bodily injury, arson, and tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair a human corpse. She is currently being held at the Bexar County jail with a bond set at $1,000,000.
