SAN ANTONIO – A troubling incident has emerged from San Antonio, where a young man has been arrested after allegedly causing serious injuries to a 4-week-old infant. According to recent reports, Aaron Espinoza, who is just 19 years old, has been charged with injury to a child with intent to cause bodily injury, a serious first-degree felony.
The San Antonio Police Department received a call to a downtown hospital on August 23rd, where medical staff reported the infant had multiple unexplained physical injuries. Upon examination, the baby was found to have visible bruises and several fractures, including broken ribs and a fractured arm and leg. This raised immediate concerns about potential child abuse.
Initially, Espinoza claimed that the injuries were accidental. He explained to a police detective that while he was changing the baby’s onesie, the infant’s arm got stuck, and he heard a popping sound as he tried to free it. He noticed that the baby’s arm became stiff and promptly informed the child’s mother before driving them both to the hospital.
However, both parents later denied knowing about the injuries to the baby’s ribs and legs, asserting that the arm injury was an accident during the clothing change. The infant’s mother mentioned that she was showering when Espinoza was responsible for changing the baby.
Upon further investigation, child abuse pediatric specialists evaluated the infant and confirmed multiple injuries, including a spiral fracture of the left arm, two fractured ribs, and other bruises. The medical professionals determined that these injuries were non-accidental, leading to serious concerns about the child’s safety.
Later that night, Espinoza reportedly approached an investigator with the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, where he confessed to fracturing the infant’s ribs. He cited stress at home and the infant’s crying as contributing factors to his actions.
However, when investigators tried to follow up with him three days later, Espinoza did not attend a scheduled interview and was uncooperative. As a result, San Antonio police arrested him, and his bond has been set at $150,000.
