WASHINGTON – Recent flash floods have caused serious damage to the only pipeline supplying water to millions of visitors at the Grand Canyon. This has raised concerns about repairs and has disrupted a significant project aimed at upgrading the existing line, which is already challenging to maintain due to the rugged terrain.
Park officials reported that approximately 40% of the 12.5-mile (20-kilometer) Transcanyon Waterline was either damaged or destroyed during the flooding. This pipeline has faced over 85 breaks since 2010, and a major repair project, costing over $200 million, was already in progress when the floods struck.
The flooding, triggered by heavy rainfall, resulted in the loss of at least two lives, with more than a dozen individuals reported missing. Over 60 people had to be evacuated from the area. As a result, the park has implemented strict water conservation measures, urging visitors to take short showers, turn off taps while brushing teeth, and flush toilets selectively to preserve their limited water supply.
Tom Martin, a seasoned river runner and hiker, emphasized the challenges faced by park officials. “They need to maintain law enforcement, rescue operations, backcountry activities, and more,” he explained. In the past, the park has relied on tanker trucks to transport water when necessary.
Repairing the pipeline is no easy feat. Completed in the 1970s, the pipeline traverses a rugged landscape, making any repair work difficult, time-consuming, and costly. The recent damage adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing upgrade project, which was designed to improve the water supply system for future visitors.
The upgrade project, which began in 2023, took over a decade to plan and fund. It includes constructing helicopter pads, building water treatment facilities, and replacing sections of the pipeline. A key objective of the project is to relocate the water intake closer to Phantom Ranch, a popular lodge at the canyon’s base, which is expected to enhance water supply reliability.
Engineers made thoughtful choices in the upgrade process, deciding to replace the original aluminum pipe with a more durable flex-steel material. This decision balances the need for lightweight materials with the need for resilience against the elements.
Frequent pipeline breaks have led to water restrictions in the park. For instance, in 2016, a luxury hotel on the canyon’s rim had to reduce dishwashing and switch to paper plates and plastic utensils due to water shortages caused by a broken pipeline. In 1995, a major 28-day repair effort necessitated trucking in water for park operations.
The park had already implemented water conservation measures in anticipation of potential shortages before the recent flooding occurred. As the situation develops, parts of the park have closed, with further flooding possible, according to the National Park Service.
Visitors are advised to reconsider their plans if they intended to hike, boat, or explore areas that are usually dry. The park website encourages checking in at visitor centers or ranger stations for the latest information.
Officials have stated that the ongoing repair and replacement project is crucial to ensuring the park can meet its water supply needs for the next 50 years. With approximately 4.4 million visitors last year, maintaining a reliable water source is vital for both the park’s infrastructure and the experience of its guests.
Interestingly, when the original pipeline was nearing completion in the 1960s, a historic flood resulted in over a foot (0.3 meters) of rain, destroying 40% of the project. This highlights the ongoing challenges posed by the canyon’s natural environment.
