BALCONES HEIGHTS, Texas – In a surprising turn of events, Balcones Heights Mayor Johnny Rodriguez was arrested this week on an assault charge stemming from an incident during a city council meeting. City spokesperson Roy Martinez has stated that the mayor may continue his duties despite the arrest.
Rodriguez, who is 64 years old, was taken into custody on Wednesday following an altercation that occurred the previous day. According to the police report, the mayor allegedly touched fellow council member Lamar Gillian, who is 78, on the shoulder. This occurred after Gillian had already expressed discomfort with being touched.
Video footage from the meeting shows the incident from multiple angles, and opinions among residents vary widely. Some, like Joann Borrego, believe the arrest was unnecessary. “He barely even touched him,” she remarked after viewing the video. “The arrest is, for me, it’s silly. It’s, like, ‘Oh my goodness. Why?’”
Others share similar sentiments. Tyronne Murray, a former resident, described the arrest as “overkill.” He mentioned that if Gillian truly felt uncomfortable, he could have simply moved away from the situation instead of remaining in close proximity.
Dane Miller echoed these thoughts, calling the incident “overexaggerated.” He pointed out that the interaction was minimal and didn’t seem to warrant such a severe response.
However, not everyone is quick to dismiss the seriousness of the situation. Cherylann Robinson cautioned that the video may not provide the full context of the exchange. “Unless you understand the back story, unless you understand what was said and what the whole conversation was about, you don’t know,” she noted, suggesting that more information is needed before jumping to conclusions.
The alleged altercation occurred as Rodriguez was attempting to exit a heated city council meeting. The video captured him stating, “I’m out of here, and I’m not going to allow this,” as tensions escalated in the room.
Gillian, for his part, declined to comment on camera but mentioned that he did not sustain any injuries during the incident.
As the community processes this incident, the next city council meeting is scheduled for September 28, where residents may continue to voice their opinions on this contentious issue.
