Target faces renewed backlash after stocking Halloween costume with ‘minstrel show features’

Retail giant Target recently faced a major backlash after it had to pull a children’s Halloween costume from its shelves. The decision came after many people on social media criticized the costume for resembling racist minstrel caricatures that are deeply offensive and rooted in a painful history of racial stereotypes.

The costume, marketed as the “Kids’ Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween costume,” featured elements like gloves, a top hat, and a grinning mask that some felt echoed the harmful imagery from Jim Crow-era minstrel shows. These performances perpetuated racial stereotypes and were part of a broader culture of discrimination and segregation.

Target issued an apology stating, “As a company, we know we got this wrong. The costume is offensive and should never have been part of our assortment. It is no longer available for sale.” The company acknowledged that this incident particularly hurt its Black guests, team members, and partners, and emphasized the need for internal review and change to prevent such mistakes in the future.

Target’s Recent Controversies

This incident comes at a time when Target has been working to recover from previous controversies and negative perceptions about its brand. After a dip in sales and reputation, Target was on a path of recovery, which seemed to be going well until the costume debacle surfaced.

Activists, including the Rev. Jamal Bryant, criticized Target for not just being careless but for promoting a costume that represents a deeply harmful symbol of racism. He pointed out that this incident reflects a lack of corporate diversity among decision-makers at Target and highlighted the need for genuine internal reforms.

Impact on Target’s Business

In early 2025, Target scaled back its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, which had initially been launched in response to the murder of George Floyd. As a result of these decisions, the retailer faced boycotts and a significant drop in market value—around $12.4 billion—by February.

Despite the recent controversies, Target has shown signs of recovery. Its stock prices rebounded significantly, reaching a 52-week high of $169.89 in late August 2023, signaling a recovery strategy that includes store refreshes and increased staffing. This turnaround plan, led by new CEO Michael Fiddelke, aims to reinforce the company’s commitment to improving customer experience.

Continued Calls for Accountability

Despite the company’s efforts to move forward, boycott organizers like Nekima Levy Armstrong argue that the mission is far from over. They insist that the costume incident is a reminder of the ongoing need for Target to reinstate its DEI programs and authentically engage with Black communities.

Armstrong emphasized that the boycott never truly ended and that Target’s public relations efforts do not substitute for genuine commitment to diversity and inclusion. The ongoing dialogue around these issues highlights a growing awareness among consumers about where they spend their money and the values that companies represent.

As the conversation continues, it’s clear that the actions of corporations like Target will be closely scrutinized, and their impact on communities will remain a critical part of their public image.

Target Corporation’s stock closed at $163.47 on August 25, 2023, reflecting the ongoing challenges the company faces in maintaining both its market position and its reputation.
