BEIRUT – Recent comments made by the U.S. special envoy to Syria, Tom Barrack, regarding Israel’s control of the Golan Heights have sparked significant debate and controversy. On Friday, during an interview, Barrack described the Golan Heights as “still” occupied by Israel, a statement that contradicts the U.S. administration’s official stance established under President Donald Trump.
The Golan Heights, a strategically important plateau, was captured by Israel from Syria in the 1967 Six-Day War and was subsequently annexed in 1981.
