This inquiry seeks to determine whether there was a conspiracy aimed at undermining the former president, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.
The Justice Department’s requests for voluntary interviews with law enforcement officials in recent weeks indicate a shift in the focus of a conspiracy investigation that previously centered on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election. This new development brings into question the 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago, which led to the FBI seizing classified documents from Trump’s Florida estate.
Sources indicate that these interview requests were not accompanied by subpoenas, allowing law enforcement officials the option to participate voluntarily in the ongoing investigation. The timeline for potential charges remains unclear, but the focus on events in Florida could provide a legal basis for prosecution in that jurisdiction.
Joe diGenova, the prosecutor reinstated in April to oversee this inquiry, declined to comment when approached by the Associated Press. Additionally, the Justice Department did not respond to requests for further clarification on the matter.
In 2023, Trump faced indictment on charges related to the unlawful retention of classified documents and obstructing the FBI’s attempts to retrieve them. However, the case was dismissed the following year by a Trump-appointed judge, Aileen Cannon, who ruled that the appointment of prosecutor Jack Smith was illegal.
Trump has consistently alleged that law enforcement and intelligence officials conspired against him over the years, linking the investigation into Russian connections during his 2016 campaign to more recent inquiries regarding his handling of classified documents and efforts to contest the 2020 election results.
