SAN ANTONIO – Recent events in the Stone Oak area of San Antonio have raised alarms for both guests and the local police. Since August 8, the San Antonio Police Department has responded to the Homewood Suites by Hilton San Antonio North a staggering 13 times due to reports of vehicle burglaries and vandalism.
Guests at the hotel, located near Loop 1604 and Stone Oak Parkway, have reported a troubling trend: dozens of vehicles have been targeted, leaving behind broken glass and frustrated visitors. Jake Knies, who is staying at the hotel, expressed his dismay, stating, “I always come out the next morning with glass on the ground, windows shattered.”
Knies noted that the situation seems to have worsened over the weekend, with approximately 18 vehicles affected. Another guest, Brenda Drgac, shared her unfortunate experience, explaining that she had to deal with the aftermath of a break-in during her stay for a medical appointment.
Drgac recounted her ordeal, saying, “You spend $500 to stay here for three nights and $700 to get your windows replaced, so it becomes an expensive place to visit.” The financial burden of vehicle repairs adds an unexpected layer of stress to an already challenging trip.
The hotel’s general manager acknowledged the rise in vehicle thefts and vandalism in the area, stating, “We are working to provide restitution to Guests for the inconvenience they experienced. We are cooperating with the SAPD to ensure those responsible are apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
Despite these assurances, guests remain concerned about the safety of their vehicles. Some, like Drgac, are contemplating checking out early due to the ongoing risk of vehicle break-ins. “I’m worried my car will be targeted again,” she admitted.
According to police, the burglars may be on the lookout for valuables, such as firearms, left in the vehicles. In an effort to deter further thefts, Drgac has left her police report visible in her car, hoping to signal to potential criminals that her vehicle has already been targeted.
As of now, police have not publicly identified any suspects related to these troubling incidents at the hotel. The situation serves as a reminder for travelers to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to protect their belongings while on the road.
