SAN ANTONIO – A recent medical emergency led to a serious chain-reaction car crash on U.S. Highway 281 near Bitters Road on Saturday afternoon, as reported by local law enforcement officials.
Surveillance footage captured by a nearby business revealed the moment a driver of a Toyota Highlander lost control while driving on the access road. The SUV struck a Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) sign before veering into the northbound lanes of the highway. Subsequently, the Highlander collided with a Dodge Ram, which then hit a Chevrolet Suburban, resulting in the Suburban rolling multiple times.
Mark Wolfe, the manager at SA Card House, recounted the harrowing event, stating that a customer was the first to alert him to the crash. “We watched the SUV come back down the hill and go into this parking lot where it basically parked,” Wolfe said. “We didn’t know what happened after that because we were more worried about the victims.”
Tragically, two young girls, aged 11 and 15, were ejected from the Dodge Ram during the collision, sustaining serious injuries. Fortunately, the driver of the Ram survived with non-life-threatening injuries.
“It was very unfortunate. It was very saddening and sad to see,” Wolfe reflected. “A lot of us thought maybe a medical emergency or something happened. Somehow they lost control of their vehicle, and they were forced to go up there.”
The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) confirmed that the driver who initiated the crash is cooperating with investigators, although their current condition remains unknown. As of Sunday, no criminal charges had been filed against any of the involved parties.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers on the road, especially when unforeseen medical episodes occur. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash to ensure the safety of all drivers in the area.
