CHICAGO – On Tuesday, severe weather wreaked havoc across the Chicago area and northwestern Indiana, leaving over half a million people without power. The region faced perilous rainstorms accompanied by extreme wind gusts that darkened the sky and crossed state lines.

Tornado warning sirens blared throughout Illinois and Indiana, prompting temporary flight stoppages at Chicago’s two major airports. Reports from personal weather stations indicated wind gusts exceeding 80 mph (128 kph), raising alarms among local residents and officials.

“These are dangerous storms!” cautioned the National Weather Service, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.

Social media was flooded with images showcasing the aftermath of the storm, depicting flooded roads, trees ensnared in power lines, and homes suffering significant roof damage.

In Homewood, a suburb of Chicago, resident Javid Jenkins shared his experience as he searched for gas to power up a generator, hoping to preserve the food in his refrigerator. “No power. It was very scary. We were down in the basement,” Jenkins, 54, recounted. ”We’re built for snow. We’re built for cold. We’re not built for this,” he lamented, reflecting on the unexpected intensity of the storm.

According to poweroutage.us, more than 600,000 customers experienced power outages in Illinois and Indiana, with Lake and Porter counties in Indiana, along with Will County, Illinois—situated south of Chicago—being particularly hard-hit. The repercussions of the storm were felt further east as well, with over 166,000 customers in Ohio also without electricity.
