LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers welcomed Tarik Skubal for his highly anticipated home debut on Monday night, but the left-handed pitcher faced challenges on the mound against the Kansas City Royals. Despite not reaching his personal performance standards, Skubal expressed pride in his efforts to keep his team competitive during the game, which the Dodgers ultimately won 6-5.
In his first start at Dodger Stadium, Skubal allowed three runs on four hits over five innings, a performance he later described as below his expectations. “I thought I competed well and gave our team a chance to win,” Skubal said. “Our offense picked me up big-time, defense picked me up big-time, and the bullpen was outstanding tonight.”
Skubal’s outing was marked by struggles with fastball command and an inability to effectively get ahead in counts, resulting in only one 1-2-3 inning. His teammates, however, rallied in the latter part of the game, with Max Muncy’s three-run double and Freddie Freeman’s RBI single propelling the Dodgers to victory.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts had anticipated an “electric night” for Skubal, a sentiment that did not fully materialize. Nevertheless, Roberts acknowledged the pitcher’s determination: “Tarik didn’t have his best stuff, but he didn’t relent. He kept going, and he gave us what he had for tonight.”
With a crowd of 51,799 fans in attendance, Skubal felt the weight of the moment. “This one was special to me, so the nerves run a little bit higher,” he shared. The enthusiastic cheers from the crowd showed their support for the newest addition to the team, acquired in a significant trade deadline deal.
In his brief time with the Dodgers, Skubal has already made a mark, throwing 95 pitches against the Royals, including two walks and a hit batter. His previous outing had been at Wrigley Field, where he pitched six innings and struck out six batters, despite the Dodgers ultimately losing that game.
The Dodgers’ decision to trade for Skubal, giving up three promising prospects, signifies their commitment to winning now while also eyeing a long-term investment in the talented pitcher, who is set to become a free agent this winter.
Despite the rocky start, both Skubal and his teammates remain optimistic. Freeman expressed confidence in the pitcher’s abilities: “I’m sure he wants to go deeper than five innings, but I like that every five, six days that he’s going to be on the mound for us.”
As the Dodgers look ahead, they are focused on securing their 14th consecutive playoff appearance. Manager Roberts, impressed by Skubal’s character and mindset, remarked, “This guy is something like I’ve never seen,” highlighting the potential he brings to the team as they aim for another championship run.
