Tragic Death of Tasia Fortune Shakes Mississippi Community
JACKSON, Miss. – The unexpected hanging death of Tasia Fortune, a 29-year-old Black woman, has left her family and the local community in shock. Her body was discovered outside an abandoned house in Jackson, Mississippi, bringing to light concerns as this marks the third hanging incident in the area within less than a year.
Authorities have not yet classified Fortune’s death as suspicious, but they are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding it. Police have stated their commitment to uncovering the truth behind her tragic passing.
A Community Remembers
A week after her body was found, a touching memorial was erected in her honor, adorned with pink and white decorations in the overgrown backyard of the abandoned house. This memorial featured rainbow pinwheels, white flowers, and teddy bears surrounding a photograph of Fortune—a stark contrast to the litter of empty chip bags and plastic bottles scattered around the area.
Jackson police responded to the scene on August 3, where they discovered Fortune hanging in the backyard. Following the identification by Hinds County’s chief medical examiner, her body has been taken into the custody of the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy is expected to reveal the cause and manner of her death.
Details Leading Up to the Tragedy
Fortune’s mother, Christy Spivey, shared that the last time she saw her daughter was on July 26, shortly before Fortune traveled to Kentucky for a family reunion. Describing Tasia as a loving mother of four, Spivey firmly believes her daughter would not take her own life, stating, “She did not do this to herself. I know my daughter, and she did not do this to herself.”
In an effort to seek justice, Jackson City Councilman Kenneth Stokes has reached out to U.S. Attorney Baxter Kruger for assistance, referring to Fortune as a murder victim in his letter, amplifying the urgency and seriousness of the case.
Investigation Status
Currently, the Jackson police have not disclosed any suspects or persons of interest in the case. A man interviewed by investigators mentioned having an argument with Fortune but insisted he had no role in her death. This man was previously arrested on an unrelated charge, leaving the community searching for answers.
Recent Similar Cases in Mississippi
Fortune’s death is particularly alarming given the recent hanging deaths of two others in Mississippi: 21-year-old Trey Reed and Cory Zukatis. Reed, a student, was found hanging last year, with authorities concluding it was a suicide. However, his family has requested an independent investigation due to lingering doubts. Zukatis, an unhoused man, was also ruled a suicide by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner.
The spate of hanging deaths in the state has drawn significant attention, especially in light of Mississippi’s complex civil rights history. The treatment of Black residents in death investigations remains a critical issue, prompting calls for transparency and thoroughness.
The Community Reaction
Spivey has emphasized her desire to avoid any assumptions that Fortune’s death may have racial motivations. Meanwhile, Bernice King, daughter of the late Martin Luther King Jr., has urged caution against rushing to conclusions. However, she acknowledged the historical fears and pain such incidents evoke within Black communities, especially in Mississippi, highlighting the need for transparency and truth in the investigation.
