SPOKANE, Wash. – A man named Aaron Farinacci, aged 37, has been charged with starting a significant wildfire in Spokane, Washington, which led to the destruction of over 850 buildings. This event forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes, with many still unable to return. Fortunately, there have been no reported deaths or severe injuries associated with the fire.

Planning the Fire

According to police reports, Farinacci meticulously planned the arson for weeks. He researched weather conditions to determine the optimal time for igniting the fire. In a shocking interview, he described fire as “powerful” and “beautiful,” suggesting a deep fascination with its destructive capabilities. Spokane County Detective Michael Drapeau revealed this information in court filings.

The Old Trails Fire

Farinacci is specifically charged with starting the Old Trails fire, one of three major blazes in the area. The fire destroyed entire neighborhoods and left many families displaced. He is also facing charges related to four smaller fires that occurred in the summer of 2025 and again last month.

Confession and Legal Proceedings

Initially, Farinacci denied involvement in the Old Trails fire, but later confessed to police, admitting his responsibility for it and several other fires. He explained that he always carried marijuana or cigarettes to justify possessing a lighter and matches, indicating an awareness of how to evade suspicion.

Details of the Arson

Detective Drapeau noted that Farinacci had researched weather patterns, choosing a day with strong winds—up to 50 mph (80 kph)—to ignite the fire. On August 1, he used items like notebook paper, matches, and a rubber band to create a device intended to start the fire with a delay. He later claimed he did not expect the fire to escalate to such a dangerous level.

Community Impact and Ongoing Risks

Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels informed the public that it would take weeks before residents could safely return to their homes. Two other significant fires in the area, the Autumn Lane and Fairview fires, were also linked to human activity, although the intent behind those ignitions is still under investigation.

Courageous Reporting

A local resident, Paul Child, played a crucial role in identifying Farinacci. While driving with his grandson, he noticed a suspicious man lingering near railroad tracks, which ultimately led to the investigation that uncovered Farinacci’s actions.

Previous Criminal History

This isn’t Farinacci’s first brush with the law. He served nearly a decade in prison for manslaughter after a tragic incident in 2010, where he killed his father. Following this, he has faced multiple mental health challenges. Since moving to Spokane in 2022, he has struggled with personal issues and turned to substance use.

Conclusion

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the fires, the legal proceedings against Farinacci continue. He has been scheduled for arraignment on five counts of first-degree arson, and discussions regarding his mental competency are ongoing. This case sheds light on the serious implications of arson and the need for community vigilance in preventing such destructive actions.
