LAS VEGAS – New developments are emerging in one of hip-hop’s most famous mysteries: the 1996 murder of the legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. These revelations come as the trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis approaches.
Davis, who is 63 years old, is accused of masterminding the drive-by shooting that took place near the Las Vegas Strip, which also injured music executive Marion “Suge” Knight. The trial is set to begin on August 10, almost three years after Davis was arrested in 2023. He has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
On the fateful night of September 7, 1996, Tupac was in the passenger seat of a black BMW, driven by Knight, when a white Cadillac pulled up alongside them and opened fire. While Knight was grazed by a bullet, Tupac succumbed to his injuries a week later at just 25 years old.
Authorities believe that this shooting was part of a fierce rivalry in hip-hop, stemming from tensions between East Coast and West Coast rappers. Davis claims to have led a faction of the Crips gang in Compton, California, which played a role in this conflict.
On the night of the incident, Davis was accompanied by three others in the Cadillac, but none of them were charged before their deaths. Here’s a closer look at the key figures involved based on court records, interviews, and Davis’ 2019 memoir, “Compton Street Legend.”
Tupac Shakur
Tupac Shakur is remembered as one of the most influential rappers in history. With five No. 1 albums and six Grammy nominations, he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2017. His star was posthumously added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023, and he will also appear in the upcoming video game “Stranger than Heaven.”
At the time of his death, his album “All Eyez on Me” was still charting, with sales exceeding 5 million copies. Born Lesane Parish Crooks in New York in 1971, his name was changed shortly after birth. His mother, Afeni Shakur, was active in the Black Panther Party, influencing Tupac’s artistic vision.
Tupac’s siblings have criticized the authorities for their slow response in pursuing justice for his death, emphasizing the need for accountability.
Marion “Suge” Knight
Suge Knight, the founder of Death Row Records and a key figure in Tupac’s career, was also in the BMW during the shooting. Despite being grazed by a bullet, he survived the attack. Now 61, Knight is serving a lengthy prison sentence for a separate crime.
Davis has stated that he and Knight were childhood friends, and in his memoir, he describes the moments leading up to the shooting, suggesting they are the only living witnesses to the events that transpired.
Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson
Anderson, who was 22 at the time of the shooting, has long been suspected as the gunman. He was related to Davis and had recently been involved in a fight with Tupac and his associates, which many believe led to the shooting.
Davis revealed that the altercation provided the motivation for the shooting, stating that it gave them a “green light” to retaliate.
Anderson denied involvement in the shooting and was killed two years later in an unrelated incident.
Deandrae “Freaky” Smith
Known as “Big Dre,” Smith was in the back seat of the Cadillac during the attack. While authorities initially believed Anderson pulled the trigger, testimony from a former associate suggested it was actually Smith who fired the shots.
Smith passed away in 2004 due to natural causes.
Terry “Bubble Up” Brown
Brown was the driver of the Cadillac during the shooting. He died in a separate incident in 2015.
The investigation into Tupac’s murder remains one of the most discussed and debated topics in music history, with many fans still seeking answers and justice for the iconic artist.
