DETROIT – In an electrifying finale at the Rocket Classic, Michael Thorbjornsen celebrated his first PGA Tour title with a remarkable performance, shooting a 7-under 63 to finish at 18 under, two shots clear of the competition. The 24-year-old golfer sealed the victory with a stunning 26-foot birdie putt on his final hole, demonstrating skill and composure under pressure.

“Perfect pace, perfect read,” Thorbjornsen remarked about his decisive putt, a testament to his growing confidence on the greens.

With this victory, Thorbjornsen not only claimed the championship but also secured a spot in the upcoming FedEx Cup playoffs, ranking No. 69 in the standings. “Just to be in the playoff for the first time is very exciting,” he said. “It’s great to be playing against the best players in the world.”

Thorbjornsen entered the final round trailing leader Davis Riley by three shots. However, a shaky start for Riley opened the door for competitors like Thorbjornsen to capitalize. “The start got the best of me and kind of put me behind the eight-ball early unfortunately,” Riley reflected after the round.

Thorbjornsen surged into the lead at No. 14, marking his third birdie in a six-hole stretch. He closed out his round with a clutch putt that curled into the right side of the cup, a fitting conclusion to a well-played final day.

His victory marks him as the eighth first-time winner on the PGA Tour this season and the second consecutive new champion, following Jackson Koivun’s win at the 3M Open the previous week. “It was such a battle, playing with some great players,” Thorbjornsen noted. “Everyone was in the mix after nine holes.”

Xander Schauffele finished in second place with a score of 65, acknowledging Thorbjornsen’s performance. “I played really well and he just beat me straight up, so hats off to him,” Schauffele stated. Davis Riley ended up third with a score of 70, struggling with four bogeys throughout his round.

Rasmus Hojgaard took fourth place with a score of 68, while Hideki Matsuyama, Matt Wallace, and Kristoffer Ventura rounded out the top five, all tying with scores of 64, 67, and 68, respectively.

Thorbjornsen, who was born in Cleveland and raised in Massachusetts, has an impressive background. He attended Stanford and previously won the 2018 U.S. Junior Amateur against Akshay Bhatia, who has since achieved three PGA Tour victories. Thorbjornsen turned professional in 2024 as the No. 1 player in the PGA Tour University ranking, a system he credits with changing lives for many young golfers.

On the day of his victory, Thorbjornsen executed a remarkable chip-in from 35 feet for birdie at No. 12, showcasing his talent for strategic play. He adeptly aimed for pins, setting himself up for short birdie putts before the long, dramatic putt that sealed his win.

Notably, Thorbjornsen’s round was bogey-free, an impressive feat given the challenging conditions that began with rain and transitioned to wind as the day progressed.

The Rocket Classic marked its final event, concluding with a strong field and large crowds. As the PGA Tour shifts to a new model for 2028, Rocket Mortgage has opted not to continue hosting the tournament, citing financial concerns and a desire to avoid becoming part of a second-tier tour.

Tournament director Mark Hollis expressed hope for the future of professional golf in Michigan, stating, “There have been some conversations about having a tournament here again. Michigan deserves to have professional golf.”
