WASHINGTON – Representative Marcy Kaptur of Ohio is recovering from non-life-threatening injuries sustained in a car accident that occurred in Toledo on Sunday morning. Her office confirmed the incident, stating that Kaptur, 80, was a passenger in a vehicle en route to a church service when the accident took place.
Despite the unfortunate event, Kaptur remains “active and alert,” looking forward to resuming her full schedule soon. Given that the House is currently on summer recess, she was not expected to be in Washington, D.C. this week, allowing her time to recover.
Kaptur, who holds the distinction of being the longest-serving woman in the history of the House of Representatives, is currently engaged in a closely watched rematch for her congressional seat against former state representative Derek Merrin. In the previous election cycle, Kaptur won by a narrow margin of just over 0.5%, a threshold that nearly triggered an automatic recount. Notably, a libertarian candidate also captured around 4% of the vote, highlighting the competitive nature of the race.
Following the accident, first responders from the Toledo police and fire departments arrived promptly at the scene. Their efforts included providing immediate medical assistance to all individuals involved in the crash. Kaptur’s office expressed anticipation for further updates from the Toledo Police as they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident.
As of now, the Toledo Police Department’s traffic division has not responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
