Berent is far from alone; many progressive-minded individuals in the United States are distancing themselves from legacy media institutions. A growing number are opting for an alternative mix of independent podcasts, digital news sites, and social media channels. This trend is part of a broader movement that has significantly influenced the rise of anti-establishment candidates this election cycle, candidates who might have otherwise been overlooked.
While liberals continue to exhibit more trust in mainstream media than conservatives, the increasing splintering of media outlets mirrors a phenomenon that has long been observed among right-leaning communities, which have cultivated their own alternative news sites over the years. The emergence of influential individual commentators in this space has proven pivotal in shaping public opinion and voter behavior.
Ryan Grim, co-founder of Drop Site News, highlights how progressive politicians are now leveraging his platform to reach potential voters. “They have ways to get covered even if the mainstream just basically ignores them,” Grim noted, emphasizing the evolution of the media landscape.
For instance, Abdul El-Sayed, a candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, is facing off against more moderate U.S. Representative Haley Stevens in the upcoming primary election. El-Sayed believes that traditional media has acted as a gatekeeper in the past, but the current environment is changing that dynamic.
The rise of independent media, especially during this election cycle, has been particularly evident in urban centers like New York City. Candidates backed by grassroots movements, such as those endorsed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani, have successfully unseated establishment-backed opponents.
Sara Hyler, a policy analyst from East Harlem, illustrates this shift. Initially, she planned to support incumbent Rep. Adriano Espaillat but changed her mind after discovering the progressive outsider Darializa Avila Chevalier through YouTube videos and podcasts. “My actual beliefs are to the left of Democrats. I don’t want a moderate,” she explained, ultimately casting her vote for Avila Chevalier, hoping to steer Congress toward more progressive policies.

With the Tea Party movement and the rise of alternative media outlets like the Daily Caller and Breitbart, conservative audiences began to find their voices outside of mainstream channels. Figures like Donald Trump have further amplified this trend, utilizing podcasts to reach voters directly.
Reece Peck, a media culture professor, notes that the left’s emergence in this space has been gradual but significant, particularly following Bernie Sanders’ first presidential run in 2016, which laid the groundwork for left-leaning platforms and creators to reach broader audiences.
As the political landscape continues to shift, the Michigan primary will serve as a litmus test for the evolving media ecosystem. El-Sayed, a long-time podcaster, has actively sought to engage with various progressive outlets and content creators to promote his campaign.

In contrast, Stevens has opted for a more traditional campaign strategy, receiving endorsements from prominent figures such as outgoing Sen. Gary Peters and Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Her campaign has also benefited from substantial financial support from organizations like the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC).
The influence of alternative media has already begun to shape the dynamics of the race. For example, Stevens recently severed ties with a campaign consultant after Drop Site revealed her previous affiliations with the controversial tech firm Palantir, known for its government contracts.
As the Democratic National Committee (DNC) adapts to the changing landscape, it has developed new digital strategies to engage voters. The DNC’s rapid-response digital account has garnered significant traction, achieving over 2 billion impressions across various social media platforms this year.
The emergence of diverse voices on the left has occasionally led to public tensions. For instance, Grim faced backlash for his coverage of a controversial candidate in Maine, showcasing the complexities of independent journalism.
Grim asserts that independent media is crucial for holding politicians accountable, emphasizing that voters want to see their representatives confronted with difficult questions. “People want to see you being accountable to questions, and if they don’t agree with you, sometimes that’s fine,” he concluded.
