SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a recent and unfortunate incident, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan was injured in a car crash earlier this month. This accident will limit his participation as training camp begins, a situation confirmed by the team on Saturday.
Reports indicate that Shanahan suffered a concussion, a broken nose, several broken ribs, and injuries to his hands. A source familiar with the matter, who requested anonymity to discuss details not publicly disclosed, provided this information to The Associated Press.
The 49ers organization has described these injuries as “non-life-threatening” and has expressed gratitude to the first responders who attended to Shanahan at the scene of the accident last week.
As the team prepares for its first practice on Sunday, assistant head coach and offensive line coach Chris Foerster will take the reins, supported by coordinators Klay Kubiak, Raheem Morris, and Brant Boyer. This adjustment reflects the team’s readiness to adapt in the absence of their head coach.
Shanahan is entering his 10th season with the 49ers and is widely recognized for his offensive expertise. Under his leadership, the team has made two Super Bowl appearances, specifically after the 2019 and 2023 seasons, as well as two additional trips to the NFC Championship game in 2021 and 2022.
With a regular-season and playoff record of 91 wins and 72 losses, Shanahan ranks third in franchise history for wins, surpassed only by legends George Seifert (108) and Bill Walsh (102).
Last season, despite facing significant injuries, the 49ers managed to finish with a commendable 12-5 record in the regular season, culminating in a playoff victory. Shanahan’s efforts did not go unnoticed, as he finished fifth in the voting for the AP NFL Coach of the Year, highlighting his capability to lead and inspire even in challenging circumstances.
