BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – In a troubling incident that highlights ongoing concerns about animal welfare, Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies and animal control officers responded to a property in far southwest Bexar County on Monday. They discovered more than a dozen dogs living in unsafe and unhealthy conditions.
The authorities found a total of 18 dogs on the property. A spokesperson from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) reported that while someone living there had attempted to care for the animals, they could no longer afford to feed them properly.
According to the deputies present, many of the dogs showed signs of malnutrition and were confined in cages or kennels that were not only cramped but also filled with feces. Additionally, all of the dogs were infested with ticks and fleas, which indicates a severe lack of proper care.
Bexar County Animal Control took custody of the dogs and will begin evaluating and treating them for their ailments. Deputies are currently working to determine who is responsible for the care of these animals and what legal actions may be taken against them.
This property has a troubling history; it was previously the site of a significant animal seizure in 2023, where deputies removed around 80 animals, including approximately 60 dogs. Sheriff Javier Salazar referred to that situation as a “puppy mill,” indicating that the animals were kept in filthy conditions.
During the earlier incident, the 79-year-old owner was found at the scene but did not face immediate charges. The ongoing situation raises important questions about animal rights and the responsibility of pet owners to provide humane living conditions for their animals.
