SAN ANTONIO – The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) recently shared bodycam footage that shows a tense exchange of gunfire between police officers and a suspect last month on the North Side of the city.
On June 16, at around 5 p.m., SWAT officers were dispatched to an apartment complex located near the 12000 block of Jones Maltsberger Road, close to East Bitters Road. Their mission was to execute an arrest warrant.
Upon arrival, the officers approached the suspect’s vehicle and noticed that he was armed. The suspect, identified as 35-year-old Ryan Pena, opened fire on the officers, prompting them to respond.
In the ensuing exchange, four San Antonio police officers fired their weapons at Pena. The bodycam footage revealed one officer shooting through the windshield of their patrol vehicle, highlighting the chaotic nature of the situation.
Once the officers believed the threat had diminished, they began issuing commands. An officer could be heard saying, “Alright, we’re good, we’re good. Back up. We’re good. We’re good. Hold. Hold.” This indicates a moment of tactical reassessment and a shift from active engagement to securing the scene.
Both Pena and Officer Adel Mokrane were injured during the gunfire and were taken to a local hospital for treatment. After the shooting, the bodycam footage captured the officer who had fired through the windshield attempting to provide medical assistance to Mokrane, reassuring him, “I’m going to work on Mo (Mokrane). Hold still. You’re good, brother. We’re good. We’re OK.”
Pena has since been arrested and faces four counts of aggravated assault against a peace officer, according to SAPD. The officers involved in this incident have been with the department for approximately eight to nine years, reflecting a level of experience that is essential in high-stress situations.
