How to keep the air inside your home clean during wildfires

MILWAUKEE – You might have noticed a spooky orange glow in the sky lately. That eerie sight is often caused by wildfire smoke, which can create serious problems beyond just a strange sunset.

While it might look cool, the smoke carries tiny particles that can lead to both short-term and long-term health issues, according to experts.

Recently, many areas in the U.S. have been covered in smoke from wildfires burning in Canada, putting millions at risk for hazardous air quality.

Health officials strongly recommend staying indoors and taking measures to ensure the air in your home is as clean as possible.

How to Safely Run Your AC

If you have central air conditioning, it can help filter the air in your home. Make sure to regularly replace the filters and choose ones rated MERV 13 or higher for the best protection. Set your air system to recirculate and close any vents that pull in outside air if possible. Experts from the University of Oregon’s Center for Wildfire Smoke Research recommend running the fan continuously during smoke events.

If you opt for a portable air filter, choose one with a HEPA filter or one that specifically states it can trap small pollutants. Avoid filters that generate ozone, as that can worsen air quality.

If you can only afford one portable air filter, create a “clean room” in your home where you can spend most of your time. Amy Kalkbrenner, an environmental epidemiologist at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, emphasizes, “Something is better than nothing.”

The Science Behind DIY Air Filters

Did you know that you can make your own air filter? Evidence shows that a simple DIY filter made by duct-taping furnace air filters to a box fan can be very effective. Scientists from the EPA have found that these DIY filters can be just as good at removing fine air pollution particles as small commercial air purifiers.

To create one, you’ll need four 20-by-20-inch furnace air filters rated MERV 13 or higher, a box fan, cardboard, and duct tape. The fan should blow air out, and ensure the arrows on the filters point inward. Seal everything tightly with duct tape for the best results.

Using Your Window AC Safely

Many window air conditioners and portable units might not have filters capable of removing fine smoke particles. Yet, managing heat is also crucial, especially when smoke and heat combine, which can worsen health effects, according to Jess Downey from the University of Oregon.

For the best setup, run your AC unit and use an air purifier or a DIY box fan filter together. Be sure your AC unit is tightly sealed in the window frame and set to recirculate air. If you don’t have AC, finding a place with clean, cool air, like a library or mall, is essential during smoke events.

Ways to Seal Your Home

To keep hazardous air out of your home, you can use towels, tape, or other materials to seal areas where outside air might enter. Dr. Khalilah Gates, a lung doctor with Northwestern Medicine, suggests thinking of it like keeping cold air out during winter.

When smoke levels rise, it’s wise to avoid burning anything indoors, including candles and gas stoves. Planning ahead for meals can help you avoid the need to cook during these times.

How Wildfire Smoke Affects Your Body

Exposure to wildfire smoke can cause symptoms like shortness of breath, chest tightness, headaches, and a burning sensation in your nose and eyes. If you start experiencing these symptoms, it’s crucial to recognize them and move indoors. Dr. Gates advises that if you’re wheezing or having trouble breathing, you should seek emergency medical help immediately.
