WELLINGTON – Sam Neill, the beloved actor known for his roles in iconic films like “Jurassic Park” and “The Piano,” has passed away at the age of 75. His family announced that he died from pneumonia in Sydney on Monday, and a private memorial will be held at his farm in New Zealand later, as confirmed by his agent to The Associated Press.

Sam Neill was also recognized for his remarkable journey through health challenges. Earlier this year, he disclosed that he had been diagnosed with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. However, he bravely fought and announced in April that he was cancer-free, thanks to a groundbreaking treatment known as CAR-T therapy, which utilizes a patient’s own immune cells to combat cancer.

His agent, Philip Grenz, clarified the circumstances surrounding Neill’s passing, stating, “Sam passed away from pneumonia.” He also highlighted that Neill had recently worked on four projects back-to-back, which are set for release in the upcoming months. “As Sam was an intensely private man who loathed a fuss, his family will honor him with a private family memorial at his farm in New Zealand at a still-undetermined later date,” Grenz explained.

The news of Neill’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and fans alike. Director Taika Waititi, who collaborated with Neill on the film “Hunt for the Wilderpeople,” expressed his sorrow on Instagram, saying, “You are so loved and will be sorely missed by us all.” Waititi affectionately referred to Neill by his birth name, Nigel, which he had changed in school due to the popularity of the name.

Steven Spielberg, who directed Neill in the original “Jurassic Park,” shared his admiration for the actor, stating, “Sam was exceptionally collaborative. I adored making all the Jurassic movies with him. Sam will never be forgotten by us or his many millions of fans around the world.” Neill’s portrayal of paleontologist Alan Grant alongside co-stars Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum remains iconic in film history.

Neill was born in New Zealand and gained international fame during the Australian film boom of the late 1970s. Despite his celebrity status, he remained grounded and was known for his humility and kindness. He was deeply involved in community projects and was a strong advocate for various causes close to his heart. In addition to acting, Neill was also a successful vintner, producing award-winning wines under his brand, Two Paddocks, in Central Otago, New Zealand.

He leaves behind a legacy of remarkable performances and contributions, as well as his four children and eight grandchildren. Sam Neill will be remembered not just for his talent but also for his genuine spirit and the joy he brought to those around him.
