SAN ANTONIO – As the weekend approaches and many plan to spend time on the water, safety officials are reminding everyone that a life jacket should top the packing list, alongside essentials like water and sunscreen. Ensuring safety on the water is not just a good practice; it’s a legal requirement.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, having properly fitted, Coast Guard-approved life jackets on board is not optional. In fact, children under 13 years old must wear a life jacket at all times when the boat is in motion, a regulation aimed at protecting our youngest boaters.

For adults, while it is not mandatory to wear a life jacket at all times, it is crucial to have a properly fitted one that is easily accessible. This means that life jackets should not be stored in plastic bags, locked compartments, or buried under other equipment, which could delay access in an emergency situation.

Fit is paramount when it comes to life jackets. A well-fitting life jacket should feel snug and secure. If it rises above a person’s chin or ears when in the water, it is too large and may not provide adequate safety. Boaters are encouraged to check the label inside the life jacket for size specifications, which include chest and weight size, ensuring that it meets the necessary safety standards.

Before heading out this weekend, it is prudent for boaters to take a few minutes to verify that every passenger has the appropriate life jacket, and that each jacket is in good condition and ready for use. This simple act could save lives.

For those still searching for a perfect spot to enjoy the water this weekend, a curated list of rivers, lakes, and swimming holes in the San Antonio area is available. Exploring these local options can provide a refreshing and enjoyable way to spend a sunny day.
