BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – Starting November 1, Bexar County drivers with older gasoline vehicles will be required to pass an emissions test prior to registering their vehicles with the state. This new regulation aims to improve air quality and ensure compliance with federal standards, as Bexar County continues to be out of compliance with the federal Clean Air Act.
The emissions testing requirement specifically targets gasoline-powered vehicles that are between 2 and 24 years old, while diesel and electric vehicles remain exempt from this mandate.
In preparation for this change, the Official Inspection Station/Texas Tag and Title office is offering a free pre-screening event on Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at their location on 10480 Culebra Road, situated near Loop 1604 on the far West Side. This initiative is designed to help drivers assess whether their vehicles will pass the upcoming emissions test.
The pre-screening can provide valuable insights, allowing vehicle owners to identify potential issues that may lead to a failure in the actual emissions test. This proactive approach can give drivers ample time to make necessary repairs before the requirement takes effect.
Once the law is implemented, the emissions test is estimated to cost around $26. It is crucial for affected vehicles to successfully pass this inspection in order to complete their registration with the state.
Charissa Barnes, the owner of the Official Inspection Station, has expressed concern regarding the potential challenges that some Bexar County residents may face in meeting this new requirement. She noted that certain demographics within the community might struggle more than others with the necessary repairs.
“Oh, absolutely,” Barnes stated, emphasizing her concerns about higher failure rates among specific groups and communities within Bexar County. This is particularly alarming given that other major Texas cities, such as Dallas and Houston, have implemented emissions testing for several years.
