SAN ANTONIO – In a significant development for the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD), the Board of Trustees has named Dr. Adrian Bustillos as the lone finalist for the position of superintendent. This decision was made during a special meeting held on Wednesday, reflecting the board’s commitment to finding a leader who can guide the district through its current challenges and opportunities.
Board President Alicia Sebastian expressed confidence in Bustillos, stating, “We believe Adrian Bustillos is the leader for this moment.” This sentiment underscores the board’s belief in Bustillos’ capabilities to effect positive change and drive educational excellence within the district.
Dr. Bustillos brings a wealth of experience to the role. He began his educational career in 2006 at El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) as a science teacher, gradually advancing to significant leadership positions, including Executive Director of the Office of Transformation. His role as a liaison between EPISD and the Texas Education Agency further demonstrates his expertise in navigating complex educational frameworks.
Most recently, since 2019, Bustillos has served as the chief transformation officer for Aldine Independent School District, where he implemented innovative strategies aimed at improving student outcomes and fostering a collaborative educational environment.
Under Texas law, there is a mandatory 21-day waiting period before a superintendent finalist can be officially hired. This period allows for additional community input and ensures a thorough vetting process. This stipulation demonstrates the district’s commitment to transparency and community engagement in educational leadership decisions.
Current SAISD Superintendent Jaime Aquino announced his intention to retire in January 2027, signaling a pivotal moment for the district. In the interim, Chief of Staff Toni Thompson will step in as acting superintendent starting July 1, ensuring that the district remains on course until a permanent leader is confirmed.
As the SAISD prepares for this transition, the selection of Dr. Bustillos reflects a strategic approach aimed at enhancing educational outcomes and responding to the evolving needs of students and families within the district.
