SAN ANTONIO – Over a century ago, the enslaved people in Galveston discovered they were free—two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation and just months after the Civil War concluded. This pivotal moment led to the creation of Juneteenth, a holiday that continues to expand in importance and recognition throughout the United States.
San Antonio is rich in opportunities to celebrate and honor Juneteenth. Here’s a glimpse of the exciting events happening in the city this week.
Music, Narration, and Reflection at the Tobin Center
Kicking off the festivities on Thursday, June 18, the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) presents Freedom: The Soundtrack of 250 Years at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, located at 100 Auditorium Circle. The event will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
This special evening coincides with America’s 250th anniversary and features a program that explores how Black musical traditions have served as powerful expressions of community and resistance. The San Antonio Gospel Heritage Choir will perform a selection of Black spirituals and gospel anthems, and they will be joined by the Grammy Award-winning Sounds of Blackness, known for their impactful work spanning gospel, jazz, R&B, and soul.

Freedom Coalition Parade Steps Off Saturday Morning
The Freedom Coalition Parade is set to begin on Saturday, June 20, at 9 a.m. at Sam Houston High School, located at 4635 East Houston Street.
This parade is described by organizers as a community gathering where families and friends can come together to educate others and remember that freedom is a universal right. The parade will proceed until 11 a.m.

Juneteenth Festival Returns to Comanche Park
On the same day, Saturday, June 20, the annual Juneteenth Festival will take place at Comanche Park No. 2, located at 2600 Rigsby Avenue, from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
This festival has its roots in 1996, when the first Juneteenth Celebration was held at the Freeman Coliseum. Over the years, it has been celebrated at various venues including the Carver Cultural Center and St. Paul Square before finding its home at Comanche Park, where it has flourished for more than 20 years.
The event has transformed into a beloved gathering spot for family reunions and community celebrations.

SA Block Party Brings an Upscale Celebration to St. Paul Square
Concluding the Saturday events, the SA Block Party will take place from noon to 7:30 p.m. at St. Paul Square.
Organizers describe the Block Party as an immersive environment designed for professionals, creatives, entrepreneurs, and cultural tastemakers—a celebration of legacy, growth, and Black culture.
