WASHINGTON – In a significant move within the artificial intelligence landscape, Anthropic, a prominent AI company, has announced the suspension of its latest AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos 5. This decision follows a directive from the Trump administration aimed at preventing the use of these advanced technologies by foreign nationals.

This action represents a pivotal step in the U.S. government’s efforts to impose export controls on sophisticated AI systems. Recently, Anthropic made Fable widely available, presenting a limited version of the more advanced Mythos model. However, access to Mythos has been tightly restricted due to concerns about cybersecurity and potential misuse.

In its official statement, Anthropic expressed disagreement with the government’s approach, criticizing the lack of clarity regarding the national security concerns that prompted the directive. The company stated, “We believe the government should have the ability to block unsafe deployments, as part of a statutory process that is transparent, fair, clear, and grounded in technical facts. This action does not adhere to those principles.”

Anthropic referred to the suspension as a “misunderstanding” and expressed hope for a swift restoration of access to its models, emphasizing their commitment to developing safe and beneficial AI technologies.

The U.S. Commerce Department has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the directive. This recent development follows President Donald Trump’s executive order, signed just ten days earlier, which aims to create a framework for evaluating the national security risks associated with advanced AI systems. Under this order, AI developers are encouraged to voluntarily participate in the vetting process prior to the public release of their technologies.
