SAN ANTONIO – Two San Antonio-area barbershops are showcasing their Spurs pride through unique haircut designs inspired by the beloved NBA team. This creative initiative not only celebrates local sports culture but also highlights the artistic talents of barbers in the community.
Frankie Castro, who has been honing his skills at The Exclusive Way on the South Side for over six years, recently introduced Spurs-themed haircut designs. For an additional $5 to $10 on top of a standard haircut, clients can leave the barbershop with a custom Spurs design etched into their hair.
Driven by a lifelong passion for art, Castro explained, “I grew up doing a lot of art as a kid, and my biggest thing was I wanted to find a job that allowed me to keep that freedom of being creative.” His journey into designing haircuts began with a client’s request for a Spurs logo, which he enthusiastically accepted.
“He was like, ‘Do you do designs by chance?’ I was like, ‘Yeah, what do you want?’ He was like, ‘Can you do a Spurs logo?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, sure. We’re going to do it today,” Castro recalled, marking the beginning of a fun and creative venture.
Typically, a full appointment, including the Spurs design, takes about 30 minutes. Castro notes that the type of hair can affect the outcome of the design, stating, “Some people could come in with thinner hair and like a design won’t stick as much, but some people can come like real dark hair, and it’ll be real bold.” He emphasizes that the process of creating intricate designs is manageable as long as one takes it step by step.
Client Makaveli Gutierrez expressed his trust in Castro’s skills, saying, “I feel like I’ve had enough good cuts by Frankie that I honestly trust anything he’s going to do. I know it’s going to come out good.” This level of client confidence underscores Castro’s expertise and commitment to quality service.
Boerne Barber Goes Beyond the Logo
In Boerne, RJ Martinez at Buena Gente Barbershop is also tapping into the Spurs spirit, taking designs to the next level. With over 25 years of experience under his belt, Martinez offers intricate designs that go beyond a simple team logo.
His creative offerings include iconic local landmarks like the Hemisfair and the Alamo, as well as imaginative designs featuring an alien to represent Spurs star Victor Wembanyama. Pricing at Buena Gente Barbershop varies based on the complexity of the design, starting from a lower price point for simple fades to up to $80 for more elaborate custom designs.
Both Frankie Castro and RJ Martinez are active on Instagram, where clients can find their portfolios and reach out to schedule appointments. Clients are encouraged to bring a photo of the design they desire and to call ahead to ensure they can reserve their spot for a creative haircut experience.
