BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A man from the far West Side was arrested after a frightening incident involving a machete, which was sparked by a disagreement over catcalling on Friday, according to Bexar County Sheriff, Javier Salazar.

The trouble began when 41-year-old Roland Hernandez catcalled a young girl in the 11900 block of White Birch Street. After someone confronted Hernandez about his inappropriate behavior, tensions quickly escalated. In a shocking turn, Hernandez pulled out a machete and began threatening multiple people nearby.

Deputies were called to the scene around 1:30 p.m. after the machete was brandished. Hernandez, however, didn’t make it easy for law enforcement. He hid inside a house, prompting the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) to attempt to coax him out with tear gas. Despite these efforts, Hernandez refused to come out.

A SWAT team was eventually called in to break into the house. After nearly six hours of standoff, Hernandez surrendered and was taken into custody. This incident marked his twenty-fifth arrest, as reported by Sheriff Salazar. Interestingly, a woman who was also in the house may face charges for obstructing law enforcement.

This event raises important questions about respect and personal boundaries in our communities. It’s vital for everyone, especially young people, to understand that catcalling and other forms of harassment are not acceptable behaviors. If someone feels uncomfortable or threatened, they have every right to stand up and speak out.

As this situation illustrates, actions can have serious consequences. Understanding the impact of our words and behaviors is crucial in fostering a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
