Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has officially secured the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, easily defeating four-term incumbent Sen. John Cornyn, as projected by the Associated Press.

Paxton established an early lead, prompting the Associated Press to call the race within just one hour after polling places closed.

As the excitement unfolded, cheers erupted from the ballroom at Paxton’s election night party when the results were announced. Paxton took the stage amidst chants from his supporters, expressing gratitude for the endorsement he received from former President Donald Trump.

“When everyone in Washington told him to abandon me and abandon the people of Texas, he didn’t listen,” Paxton stated during his acceptance speech. “President Trump is the leader of our party, and his endorsement is the most powerful force in politics.”

Paxton, who has had an extensive career in the Texas Legislature and was elected Attorney General in 2014, announced his U.S. Senate candidacy in April 2025. Cornyn, who was first elected to the Senate in 2002, has now been defeated in this primary.

In the upcoming election, Paxton will face Democratic nominee James Talarico, an Austin-area state representative and former teacher who successfully won his primary against U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett.

Talarico’s campaign is focused on economic equality, specifically addressing the growing gap between billionaires and everyday Americans struggling to make ends meet, as highlighted on his campaign website.

U.S. senators serve six-year terms, and the upcoming election promises to be a pivotal moment for Texas politics.

The Associated Press contributed to this report, providing real-time updates and insights into the unfolding election landscape.
