SAN ANTONIO – A San Antonio business owner is turning post-playoff celebration messes into a community movement, and he’s hoping others will join in.

Norman Velez, the owner of Brooster’s Backyard Icehouse on Pleasanton Road, launched a cleanup effort along Southwest Military Drive following Spurs playoff victories. His initiative emerged from a desire to enhance his community and address the litter left behind after celebrations.

Velez noticed the aftermath of these celebrations during his commute home from work, where trash was often strewn across the streets. Disturbed by the sight, he resolved to take action. “I personally will be on Southwest Military Drive tomorrow morning picking up the trash,” Velez stated in a heartfelt Facebook Live video.

What began as a solo pledge quickly gained momentum. “I didn’t really think it was gonna be a big deal, but the response I’m getting is amazing, and I just got to say thank you to everyone,” he expressed, reflecting on the unexpected support from the community.

Since his initial commitment, numerous residents have taken to social media to express their support and join the cause. This grassroots movement exemplifies the power of community engagement, highlighting how individual actions can inspire collective responsibility.

Velez emphasized the importance of personal accountability in his efforts. “I can’t control what other people do, but I can control what I do,” he noted, embodying a spirit of civic duty that resonates with many.

His vision extends beyond merely cleaning a single block. The Brooster’s Roosters Street Team is set to meet at Southwest Military Drive and Pleasanton Road every morning after each Spurs playoff victory, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. This ongoing commitment fosters a sense of community pride and encourages sustainable practices among residents.

In a time where community involvement is crucial, initiatives like Velez’s not only beautify neighborhoods but also strengthen social bonds, demonstrating that collective action can lead to meaningful change.
