LAS VEGAS – Pavel Dorofeyev has solidified his reputation as a key player for the Vegas Golden Knights, particularly known for his powerful shot from the right circle. This season, he set a franchise record by scoring 20 power-play goals, showcasing his skill and talent in crucial moments. However, as the Stanley Cup playoffs intensify, the demand for toughness and resilience among players escalates.
In a pivotal Game 5 against the Anaheim Ducks, Dorofeyev demonstrated this resilience after taking a hard shot to his right knee during the second period. Despite the pain, he returned to the ice and made a significant impact by scoring the game-winning goal at 4:10 of overtime, leading the Golden Knights to a nail-biting 3-2 victory. This win places Vegas just one victory away from advancing to the Western Conference final.
“I just blocked a shot,” Dorofeyev stated about the incident. “It’s kind of a (lousy) part of my job, but it hurts more when I miss it. I just had to get myself together and get back on the ice.” His determination is evident, as he has now scored seven goals during this postseason.
The next challenge for the Golden Knights comes on Thursday night in Game 6 at Anaheim. A victory would mark their first trip to the conference finals since they claimed the Stanley Cup in 2023. Meanwhile, the Ducks are eager to push the series to a decisive Game 7 back in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Tomas Hertl, who had gone 29 games without a goal dating back to the regular season, has turned a corner with two goals in his last two games, including a power-play goal that contributed to Dorofeyev’s success in the first period. Jack Eichel also played a crucial role, assisting on both of Dorofeyev’s goals, including the overtime winner.
In goal, Carter Hart faced considerable pressure but delivered a commendable performance, stopping 34 shots after a difficult outing in the previous game. “We have all the faith in the world in Carter,” said Vegas defenseman Rasmus Andersson. “He’s stolen a couple of games for us, and tonight was another example of his resilience.”
The Ducks fought hard and found success when defenseman Olen Zellweger scored his first career playoff goal, tying the game at 2 with just over three minutes left in regulation. Beckett Sennecke also continued his scoring streak, marking his fourth consecutive game with a goal.
Ducks center Ryan Poehling faced a tough situation when he was checked hard into the boards by Vegas defenseman Brayden McNabb, resulting in a five-minute major penalty and ejection for McNabb. Coach John Tortorella of the Golden Knights expressed confusion over the officiating, questioning the consistency of calls during the game.
As the playoffs progress, both teams are proving their mettle in high-pressure situations, and hockey fans are in for an exciting finish. With both teams showcasing skill, resilience, and a determination to win, the upcoming games promise to be thrilling as they fight for a spot in the next round.
