Nayomie Mendoza has become accustomed to how Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the U.S.: the platters of tacos, the pitchers of margaritas, and the jubilant sounds of mariachi bands.

However, Mendoza, who owns Cuernavaca’s Grill in Los Angeles, emphasizes the importance of honoring Mexican history and the significance of the holiday. This year, she plans to celebrate not just with food and music, but by highlighting Mexican resilience and history, particularly the victory over French forces during the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

“Just looking at how much they did with very few resources,” Mendoza explained, “It just showed resilience. So, on Cinco de Mayo we always make it a testament of our resilience.”

This year’s celebrations reflect a broader movement among Mexican American business owners and community leaders to reclaim Cinco de Mayo, shifting the focus from stereotypes to the rich history and culture of Mexico. Sehila Mota Casper, director of Latinos in Heritage Conservation, noted, “These are just incredible moments of educating and knowledge sharing. The more we educate, the better a community and people we become.”

Emphasizing Authenticity in Celebrations

As Cinco de Mayo approaches, U.S. revelers might notice a shift in how restaurants are celebrating. Raul Luis, owner of Birrieria Chalio, is committed to serving traditional Mexican dishes, or “guisados,” that showcase authentic flavors and cooking styles. He believes that offering well-prepared, traditional meals will keep customers coming back, regardless of their background.

“It’s the ultimate opportunity for restaurants to take advantage of that moment and bring them in and entice them to authentic Mexican food,” Luis said.

The Historical Significance of Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 victory of Mexican troops over French forces at the Battle of Puebla. This victory was significant for Mexican soldiers, providing an emotional boost against a better-equipped enemy. In Mexico, historical reenactments are held annually, featuring participants dressed as soldiers from both sides.

In the U.S., the day celebrates Mexican American culture with parades, street food, block parties, and traditional music and dance. However, it is often confused with Mexican Independence Day, which falls on September 16.

Latino activists highlight the misconceptions surrounding Cinco de Mayo, often fueled by marketing that relies on stereotypes. The goal is to educate the public and promote a deeper understanding of the holiday’s true significance.

Resilience Amid Challenges

In recent years, Latino communities have faced increased scrutiny and challenges, particularly with anti-immigrant sentiments rising. Mendoza, along with other business owners, sees Cinco de Mayo as an opportunity to showcase resilience and pride in their heritage.

As Cuernavaca’s Grill celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, Mendoza plans to incorporate a food and toy drive into the festivities to support those struggling in the current climate. “This is a testament of our resilience,” she asserts, “It’s a testament of our hard work. It is pride in our community and everything that we’ve accomplished.”
