LEON VALLEY, Texas – Authorities have arrested a 27-year-old man in connection with a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a pedestrian last month in Leon Valley. The accused, identified as Matthew Valerio, was taken into custody and is now facing serious legal repercussions.

According to jail records, Valerio was booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center on Wednesday morning, charged with a collision involving death, classified as a second-degree felony. This charge carries significant weight under Texas law, highlighting the severity of the incident.

In addition to the recent charge, Valerio faces multiple outstanding charges from La Salle and San Patricio counties, indicating a troubling history of legal issues. A judge in Bexar County has set his bond for the collision charge at $250,000, reflecting the court’s recognition of the crime’s gravity.

Details of the Incident

The tragic incident occurred on March 7, shortly before 8:30 a.m., in the 5600 block of Grissom Road, near Timberhill Drive. Emergency services were dispatched following reports of a crash. It was three days later that authorities identified the victim as 43-year-old Rose Marie Jones.

Flight from the Scene

Eyewitness accounts and police investigations revealed that after striking Jones, Valerio abandoned his vehicle, an Audi, at a nearby apartment complex and fled on foot. Security surveillance footage captured a still image of a man running, which investigators later confirmed to be Valerio through a relative’s identification.

Following his escape on foot, Valerio reportedly continued running eastbound on Grissom Road before turning onto Poss Road, where he was picked up by a white SUV. This detail raises questions about the extent of Valerio’s planning and awareness of the consequences of his actions.

Next Steps in Legal Proceedings

As the legal process unfolds, Valerio is expected to appear in court again on July 14. His case will likely draw significant attention due to the nature of the charges and the impact of the incident on the community. The tragic loss of Rose Marie Jones serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with operating a vehicle and the devastating consequences of negligence and reckless behavior.

This incident highlights the importance of road safety and the need for drivers to remain vigilant and responsible. As the community processes this tragedy, the impact on families and loved ones remains profound, underscoring the need for continued discussions on vehicular safety and accountability.
