How does a kangaroo escape a petting zoo? It’s not just a silly question; it’s the story of Chesney the kangaroo, who made headlines by scaling an eight-foot fence and going on an unexpected adventure in Wisconsin.

Chesney, a 16-month-old kangaroo, escaped from Sunshine Farm in Necedah, Wisconsin, after some stray dogs frightened him. His keeper, Debbie Marland, and a team of volunteers were determined to find him, embarking on a three-day search that had the entire town invested in the hunt.

The search team turned to innovative tools, including heat-seeking drones, to track down the adventurous kangaroo. Colton Johnson, who operates Midwest Aerial Drone Services, used his drones to help find lost pets and was now on a mission to locate Chesney. He described the sight of Chesney’s heat signature as looking “like a dinosaur running through the woods.”

Chesney managed to stay within a three-mile radius of the farm during his escapade but kept his pursuers guessing. Despite several sightings and close encounters, he proved to be quite the elusive kangaroo. At one point, he even jumped into a cold river to escape capture!

As days passed, the search team grew worried when there were no sightings of Chesney on Friday. However, he was eventually found nestled under a tree, but once again, he managed to evade capture by hopping away at lightning speed—up to 20 mph!

On Saturday morning, Marland returned to the area with Chesney’s favorite treats and familiar scents. After some anxious waiting, Chesney was spotted, and with a calm approach, volunteer Stacy Brereton was finally able to scoop him up and bring him back home.

Marland expressed her gratitude for the community’s support during the search, noting how everyone came together to help find Chesney. The kangaroo has since become something of a local celebrity, inspiring a children’s book about his adventure.

Chesney, who shares his living space with his roommate Kenny, was happy to be back home. While he was a bit hungry and tired from his escapade, he was otherwise healthy and set to receive a checkup soon. To prevent future escapes, Marland plans to reinforce the kangaroo enclosure with a new mesh top.

This heartwarming tale of Chesney’s daring escape not only highlights the bond between animals and their keepers but also showcases the power of community spirit. The adventures of Chesney will surely be remembered for years to come, reminding us all of the wild and wonderful surprises that life can bring.
