BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – A woman named Giovanni Leija, 22, has been arrested for animal cruelty after deputies discovered a severely underweight dog in her apartment. This incident came to light following reports of a dog being left unattended outside her balcony in the 5500 block of Mansion Bluff.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office, Leija claimed she had owned the dog for five years and insisted that she fed him every morning before heading to work. However, she admitted that the dog was typically kept indoors but was left outside during her work hours.
Upon entering the apartment, deputies found a male pit bull/boxer mix that appeared “very thin,” with visible ribs, indicating significant weight loss. The situation outside was equally concerning; the patio held two empty, dry food bowls and several piles of feces, leading authorities to believe the dog had been left outside for an extended period.
An Animal Control Officer from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the dog was indeed underweight and estimated him to be around six to seven years old. This assessment was pivotal in leading to Leija’s arrest.
Based on the evidence gathered, Leija was arrested and booked into the Bexar County Adult Detention Center. Interestingly, records indicate that she was released the following day, Thursday.
