SAN ANTONIO – As the 2025-26 NBA regular season approaches its conclusion, the competition for the coveted Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is heating up. Among the frontrunners is the formidable San Antonio Spurs big man, Victor Wembanyama, who is gaining significant recognition for his performance this season.

According to NBA.com’s MVP Ladder, Wembanyama currently ranks No. 2, trailing only Oklahoma City Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is seen as the leading candidate for the award. This leap in ranking reflects Wembanyama’s impressive contributions to his team’s success.

Wembanyama’s rise in the MVP rankings came as he surpassed Denver Nuggets center Nikola Jokić, who now sits at No. 3. This change underscores the growing impact Wembanyama has had on the court, particularly as the Spurs have strung together an impressive run.

The Spurs have been on a remarkable trajectory, winning 19 of their last 21 games since February 1. This surge in performance has put them in contention for a top playoff spot in the Western Conference, currently trailing the Thunder by just 3.5 games.

As of Thursday, Wembanyama has been averaging an impressive 26.6 points, 11 rebounds, and 3.8 blocks over the nine games played in March. His versatility and dominance on both ends of the court have made him a key player for the Spurs.

While Wembanyama’s performances are noteworthy, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has also made headlines by breaking the NBA record for the most consecutive games scoring 20 or more points, surpassing a mark previously held by Wilt Chamberlain for 63 years. Gilgeous-Alexander’s current streak stands at 130 games, solidifying his position as the MVP favorite.

If Wembanyama secures the MVP award, he would join an elite group of Spurs players. Only two Spurs have previously received this honor: David Robinson, who won in 1995, and Tim Duncan, a two-time MVP winner in 2002 and 2003. This historical context adds weight to Wembanyama’s pursuit of the award and highlights the franchise’s legacy of excellence in the NBA.
